The municipality has developed a tailored sustainable mobility plan, which includes a SWOT analysis based on interviews and meetings with all stakeholders. The results of a lengthy public participation process (comprising a citizens’ forum, workshops, surveys, promotional campaigns and roundtable discussions) were incorporated within the mobility diagnostics and action plan.

During European Mobility Week 2009, the municipality’s efforts to promote sustainable urban mobility were given recognition. These efforts centered on instilling good travel habits in schoolchildren: an innovative “walking” school bus was introduced, and a traffic park was created where children are able to learn about road safety from members of the local police. The municipality also introduced electric motorcycles for the police, developed a blueprint for a new local mobility plan, and installed new bicycle parking facilities.

Arenas de San Pedro works hard to involve its citizens and stakeholders in achieving sustainable urban mobility. The municipality was nominated for the 2011 CIVITAS Award for Public Participation, and its efforts were recognised during the annual award ceremony.
